Getting Started With Chip Shots

chipsequence

Chipping fundamentals

  1. Set up with feet slightly open (feet left for right handers) and inside shoulder width apart
  2. Get weight 60/40 on your front side
  3. Hands held slightly higher than on full swings (similar to putting)
  4. Ball middle of stance, to slightly behind middle of stance
  5. Eliminate wrist cock on the take away. It is an arm swing
  6. Keep body stable
  7. Back swing length matches follow through length

Drill 1 – Bump & Run

  1. Hit bump and runs with pw, 9i, 8i, 7i.
  2. Grab the 9 iron and place your balls approximately 5 feet of the edge of the putting green
  3. Concentrate on landing the ball one pace onto the green by putting a coin 3 feet onto the green and try to land the ball on the coin.
  4. This will make you focus on getting the ball rolling as soon as possible.
  5. As you switch clubs, pay attention to how far the ball rolls out for each iron. This will give you the feel you need to know when to hit each club. i.e. 7 iron rolls out further than 8, 8 further than 9, etc… Depending on how much room you have to work with on the green when the ball lands
  6. Hit 1 shot with 9 iron
  7. Switch clubs and hit the 8 iron
  8. Hit the 7 iron
  9. My favorite drill is where you start with 10 balls and take one away every time you make it until you have no balls left.

It is important to get feedback on the shots that you hit solid with a comfortable tempo.

Putter Grip For Softer Feel On Chips

If you struggle with the feel of chip shots because you are used to using more loft, try a traditional putter grip to soften the feel.
